The New York State Police are investigating a homicide at the Upstate Correctional Facility located in Malone, St. Lawrence County. On April 6, 2026, officers responded to the facility on Bare Hill Road following reports of a deceased inmate.
The investigation revealed that Michael J. Campbell, 51, was found unresponsive under a sheet in his cell. Further examination indicated signs of foul play, specifically that Campbell had been strangled with a shoelace by his cellmate, Andrew Hernandez, 42. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death was asphyxia due to ligature strangulation, and the death was ruled a homicide.
This is an ongoing investigation. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office, and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are providing assistance. Charges against Andrew Hernandez are pending.
