A Saratoga County community is mourning the loss of John E. Petralia Jr., who passed away on May 6, 2026, at Albany Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of service and kindness. Born in Thomson, NY, John spent his formative years in Schuylerville Central School and was active in his youth, including as an altar boy and in athletics. He lived most of his life in Saratoga Springs before retiring to Greenwich, NY.
John’s life was marked by significant service. After briefly working at General Electric, he proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War with the 1st Marine Air Wing, capturing moments of his service through photography. Following his military career, he dedicated years to law enforcement with the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s office, retiring and then continuing to serve the community as a supervisor for the US Postal Service in Glens Falls.
A man of many interests and passions, John loved sports, particularly golf and the New York Yankees, and enjoyed boating on Saratoga Lake. He was known for his love of trivia, frequenting Ollie’s Bar, and weekly dinners with his daughter, Amy. John cherished family trips to Cape Cod, shared stories during joyrides, and was famously kind, often helping others and bringing dog biscuits for his canine friends. He is survived by his wife, daughter, siblings, and many family and friends, and his family kindly asks for donations to support local wildlife and honor guards.
