A local resident recently reported being scammed after attempting to donate to a basketball team fundraiser. According to reports, the incident occurred in the parking lot of a Hobby Lobby in Saratoga Springs.
The woman was approached by two men who claimed they were raising funds for their team by selling candy. One of the men, identified as Antonio Taylor, asked her to tap her card on his phone for payment. Initially agreeing to a $5 transaction, she was later shocked to see two charges appear on her account: $1 and $500.
Taylor was arrested for theft by deception and operating a business without a license. He allegedly claimed the phone malfunctioned and promised to refund the $500, but fled with the money. Community members are reminded to be cautious with unexpected donation requests and to use secure payment methods.
