Research scientist Melissa Prusinki spent time in Ballston Spa’s woods dragging for ticks. These tiny arachnids are being checked for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, a crucial step in understanding where the disease is spreading.
Dr. James McDonald, New York State Health Commissioner, explained ticks get their blood meal from humans and animals, and they spread diseases like Lyme. The black-legged tick, which requires deer for part of its lifecycle, has increased dramatically since 2000, helping the disease spread in a “stepping stone” pattern.
While this story is focused on Ballston Spa, it’s a reminder that tick activity and Lyme disease are evolving across the region. Staying aware and checking for ticks is always a good practice, especially as the season progresses.
