A family-run farm in Malta is concerned about a proposed town-wide zoning overhaul. The 125-acre Cunningham Lake View Farm, operated by Dave Avenarius and his family for over 170 years, uses every acre for various agricultural activities.
Fearful that a new zoning classification called “land conservancy” could restrict use on about half their property (65 acres), the Avenarius family worries it could impact the farm’s long-term viability, as they utilize the space extensively for livestock, produce, and other farming operations.
Though the proposal stemmed from Malta’s Comprehensive Plan, town officials reacted to public feedback during a recent hearing. Supervisor Cynthia Young confirmed the zoning board is revising the map and assures that the new plan aims to avoid affecting the farm, with a revised map expected by an upcoming town meeting.
