A beloved resident of Skowhegan, Joan S. Cross, wife of the late Robert B. Cross Jr., passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of community spirit and dedication.
Joan’s life in Skowhegan was filled with activity. After graduating from Madison High School in 1952, she worked at the Birches Ice Cream Stand and later held jobs at the Federal Trust and Skowhegan Savings Bank. She joined her husband in managing Cross Hardware, contributing significantly for its final 34 years. Throughout her life, Joan was actively involved in local organizations, including the Skowhegan Area Chamber of Commerce, the Semper Fidelis Club, the Bloomfield Garden Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Federated Church. Notably, she served for 27 years on the board of the Redington Memorial Home.
Known for her love of family and community, Joan cherished time with her children, Rebecca Young, Cynthia Junco, and Robert Cross, her brother William Saultes, and her numerous grandchildren. She also enjoyed creating welcoming displays at the hardware store, cooking for loved ones, and preserving memories through cherished family moments. Joan’s commitment to Skowhegan and its people will be deeply missed.
