A beloved resident of Skowhegan, Joan S. Cross, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of community spirit and dedication. Born in Madison in 1934, Joan married Robert B. Cross Jr., and together they built a life deeply rooted in Skowhegan, working at the family business, Cross Hardware, for many years alongside her husband.
Joan was known for her active involvement in local organizations. She and Bob served the Skowhegan Area Chamber of Commerce for decades, receiving its Heritage Award, and Joan served on the town planning board and as president of the Semper Fidelis Club. Her proudest contribution was her 27-year service on the board of the Redington Memorial Home, helping with its successful expansion project.
Throughout her life, Joan cherished family, community, and home. She enjoyed creating welcoming spaces, from the store’s windows at Cross Hardware to her own home, decorated with seasonal flair. She fondly recalled family traditions, from holiday dinners and summer cookouts to her mother ironing with music, and shared a special bond with her identical twin sister, Jean. Joan will be missed for her warmth, resilience, and unwavering community involvement.
