The Le Moyne Dolphins baseball team secured a hard-fought split of a doubleheader against Mercyhurst, winning the first game 11-4 and falling just short in the second, 7-5, on Saturday at Dick Rockwell Field.
In game one, the Dolphins jumped out quickly with a two-run homer from Zachary Kourous. A thrilling rally in the bottom of the first inning, keyed by a sacrifice fly from Paulie Goodness, tied the game before Le Moyne took the lead. They built their advantage later, highlighted by Robert Wegrzyn’s impressive grand slam in the fifth inning. The offense was well-rounded, with five different players contributing RBIs, led by Wegrzyn’s two-run game and Adam Sullivan’s two-run drive. Freshman Isaac Brozon also chipped in with two hits. Right-hander AJ Petraitis earned the win, followed by Luke Connors picking up his second save with a scoreless relief stint.
The second game saw the Lakers fight back, taking the lead in the ninth inning and holding on for a 7-5 victory. Despite a valiant effort, Le Moyne couldn’t overcome the late charge from Mercyhurst. Paulie Goodness, once again, drove in a run, and the team showed resilience throughout the contest.
