A beloved member of the Saratoga County community, Alfred “Fred” Schuttenhelm, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and community spirit in Clifton Park.
Fred’s journey began in Troy, and his early years included graduating from Lansingburgh High School before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1950. He served honorably during the Korean War, stationed in Japan, and earned several military medals for his service. After returning, Fred built a long and respected career with Allied-Signal Corporation’s Bendix Friction Materials Division, eventually becoming a plant manager and divisional leader, known for his technical expertise and steady judgment. He also earned a degree in Economics and Business Administration from Russell Sage College while working full time.
Fred was married to the late Rose McDermott Schuttenhelm. He is survived by his children, Mary, Karen King, Richard, Lisa Hernandez, and Thomas, along with his eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his sister, and many extended family members and friends. In retirement, he remained active, volunteering at Albany International Airport, serving with the Knights of Columbus, the Society of the Friends of Saint Patrick, and the Honor Guard at Saratoga National Cemetery. Fred will be remembered for his humility, strength, and lifelong commitment to family and community. A Visitation was held on April 10, 2026, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on April 11, 2026, both at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park.
