Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS is stepping up to help make emergency visits less stressful for people who are neurodivergent, especially those on the autism spectrum. The agency has recently purchased specialized “Carter Kits,” designed to be used inside ambulances. These kits contain items like earmuffs for loud noises and fidget toys to help reduce overstimulation at the scene.
These sensory bags are specifically intended for children and adults who might find emergency situations overwhelming due to sensory sensitivities. Maggie Collins, the special projects coordinator, explained that the community overwhelmingly supported the initiative, confirming it addresses a local need. The kits are a thoughtful addition aimed at supporting anyone feeling stressed during an emergency visit.
Before the kits are fully deployed, the focus is on training EMS personnel on how to effectively use them and understand the needs they address. The purchase of 15 kits, totaling a couple thousand dollars from the agency’s outreach budget, received a warm community response on social media, reinforcing the decision. The team hopes other agencies will be inspired to acquire similar kits.
