A SUNY Fredonia senior, Julia T. Skiba, is being recognized as a “Future Physician” and is set to receive the prestigious Lanford Presidential Prize at the university’s 199th Commencement on May 16. This award, established by the Fredonia College Foundation in memory of former President Oscar E. Lanford, honors a graduating senior who exemplifies balanced achievement and embodies Fredonia’s ideals.
Skiba, a Molecular Genetics major with a perfect 4.0 GPA and a minor in Communication from Averill Park High School, is planning a career in surgical dermatology. Her path towards medicine is supported by extensive hands-on experience in healthcare settings and a goal to become a “physician-scientist,” merging medical training with her genetics background for personalized patient care.
During her time at Fredonia, Julia demonstrated excellence through her strong academic record, leadership skills, and dedication. Her practical experience includes working as a medical assistant in dermatology and a patient care technician in a hospital emergency department, while her research in Dr. Jonathan Kniss’ lab focused on zebra fish genetics, honing her scientific skills and problem-solving abilities.
