A new bill introduced by Assemblyman Jordan Wright in New York State is sparking debate about mobile barber services. Currently, New York law requires barbers to operate from a licensed physical location, preventing them from working solely out of a vehicle like a van or trailer. This proposed legislation would change that, allowing barbers to apply for special licenses to operate mobile barber shops directly at customers’ homes or businesses.
While Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh co-sponsored the bill, she expressed concerns about its implementation. She questioned how crucial details like tax collection, safe access and egress, and the disposal of wastewater would be managed under this new system.
On the other side, local barbers like Cassandra Colon, known as “Kat So The Pull Up Barber,” support the move. She points out that offering services from a mobile location is beneficial, especially for customers with social anxiety or sensory sensitivities who find it difficult to visit traditional salons. Colon herself is actively fundraising to purchase a mobile barber bus. Even established shops, like Roots Barber Company, see potential benefits, viewing mobile services as a valuable addition or expansion opportunity, despite acknowledging possible competition.
The bill has passed the Assembly and is now awaiting Senate approval. If passed, it could significantly change how barber services are delivered in New York State, bringing greater convenience but also requiring careful consideration of the operational details raised by critics.
