State park officials in Saratoga Springs are proposing a new way to manage the deer population in Spa State Park. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is considering allowing hunters to use bows and crossbows on a specific 650-acre area within the park.
This initiative aims to help balance nature, as an overpopulation of deer can disrupt the local ecosystem. Hunters would need to apply for permits, with 15 spots available for the hunting season running from October 13th to January 1st. Adam Trudeau from the National Deer Association supports the idea, seeing it as a way hunters can help manage wildlife while providing a resource.
The park already has a hunting program in Moreau Lake State Park, and similar rules would apply here, prohibiting hunting within 250 feet of buildings, roads, and parking lots. Park staff will hold an information session on May 14th to discuss this proposal further.
