Corey Young, recently exonerated after a 1998 conviction for shooting at Albany police officers was overturned, is now taking legal action against the state and the city of Albany. His attorneys, Larry Rosen and Josh Kelner, plan to file a civil lawsuit seeking damages for the nearly three decades Young spent incarcerated as an innocent man.
The reversal came after a review by the Albany County District Attorney’s office found significant flaws in the original case. Key evidence, including blood collected at the scene, did not match Young, even back then. His attorneys also revealed that three witnesses who previously testified Young confessed later recanted their statements, indicating they were obtained improperly.
Young’s case is now one of several recent exonerations in Albany stemming from investigations potentially flawed by the same detectives involved. His attorneys argue it highlights systemic issues, noting New York state has documented over 370 exonerations since 1989, reflecting broader failures in past oversight.
