Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County recently celebrated the success of New York’s Agriculture Literacy Week! This initiative, coordinated locally, offered students from 24 early education and elementary schools a valuable opportunity to learn about the food system and farming.
The centerpiece of the event was the book “Seasons on the Farm,” guiding students through the four seasons on a New York farm. Interactive activities like paper seasons wheels and targeted questions helped children understand how farm life and food production change throughout the year, exploring themes like responsibility and patience.
This program shone a light on the vital role agriculture plays right here in Chautauqua County, home to numerous farms contributing to local food systems and the economy. The enthusiastic engagement from students, sparked by questions about farm animals and chores, highlights the importance of connecting youth with their food sources and fostering a deeper appreciation for agriculture.
Thanks go to the 47 dedicated volunteers who read, answered questions, and promoted agriculture, as well as the 16 generous donors who made the program possible. Their collective effort ensured a successful week, creating positive memories and educational moments for hundreds of students.
