Saugerties High’s softball team faced a tough weekend, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, against Ballston Spa and Valley Central at Cantine Field. The Sawyers dropped the first game 4-2 to Ballston Spa, where pitcher Alaina Conrad achieved her 200th career strikeout. Despite Saugerties holding a 2-0 lead after two innings, Ballston Spa tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth. Coach Mike Tiano noted the team needs to improve on mistakes for upcoming league play.
The second game was even more costly, as Saugerties suffered a 13-1 loss to Valley Central. Five errors by the Sawyers resulted in nine unearned runs for the Cardinals. Lauren Stinemire took the loss for Saugerties.
Meanwhile, Pine Plains dominated Marlboro, winning 9-0 in the other non-league contest. The Dukes start the Mid-Hudson Athletic League season the following Monday against Roosevelt.
The Sawyers will look for a win in their next home game, hosting Roosevelt of the Mid-Hudson Athletic League on Monday, April 14. Pine Plains plays Rondout Valley on Monday. Both teams return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 15, with MHAL games against Wallkill and Red Hook.
