Russell’s Deli in Ballston Spa is closing its doors for good, as owners Russell and Judy Shapiro have sold the business and are preparing for retirement. They officially handed over the keys to new owners Thursday, marking the end of an 18-year run for the popular Milton Avenue restaurant.
The Shapiros purchased the deli in 2005, continuing a career path that began in 1991 when Russell opened his first deli and later revitalized three other locations before establishing this Ballston Spa spot. Despite surviving the COVID-19 pandemic, the workload became increasingly demanding for the couple, with Russell noting they had no help for the past three and a half years.
Russell offered sage advice to anyone considering a career in hospitality: “You’ve got to give it 100% all the time… you better love it.” He admitted the constant hustle has been exhausting, and retirement promises quieter mornings. The new owners plan to keep the name, familiar menu, and continue serving the community, while the Shapiros look forward to life on Cape Cod.
