A historic landmark in Corinth, the First Baptist Church on Palmer Avenue, is set for demolition due to its unsafe condition, which recently forced a partial closure of Main Street. Village officials, working with the property owner, have authorized the removal of the century-old building following a consent agreement.
The decision comes after engineers determined the structure could not be repaired safely, creating an imminent public safety risk at the start of April. Asbestos abatement will be handled by professionals during the demolition, which begins Tuesday. While the building is being removed, efforts will be made to salvage the church’s bell, along with its sea level marker and historic plaque.
This significant structure, built around 1898, served the community for decades before the congregation relocated in the 1990s. The road closure remains in effect for the public, though local traffic access is permitted from Mechanic to Oak streets.
